Once blocked, and unable to find the correct colour, I dyed the hat with oasis spray. For the headband, the gold sinamay was folded, so that no edges were visible, and hand sewn into the crown. For the bow, strips of gold sinamy were cut on the bias, and hemmed with millinery wire using invisible tread. The hat is made of silk, with some interfacing inside to provide a bit more structure. The headband provides more stiffness and also feature a moiré effect. I joined in on the project a little bit later than the rest, so the art direction had already been discussed, along with the goal to be as sustainable as possible. For the commander character, we wanted military influence, so I sourced tactical trousers, style epaulets and kept to neutral earthy tones. the earthy tones also made the costume blend nicely with the set. The sustainability goal was achieved through purchasing secondhand clothing, then embellishing with the spacecraft logo, which I design in consultation with the rest of the team. Where I had to make the costumes, I purchased second hand curtains and the foundation fabric.
